Talk:NewLocalization
From Wiki.ooo4kids.org
Hi, i'm Angelo and i help to translate this wiki in italian. in this page i've incountred two mistakes (i hope this is or i can change hobby) and wish to submit a suggestion:
the mistakes (i think they are)
* Average
Text [ en-US ] = "Average";
Text [ fr ] = "Moyen";
Text [ en-US ] = "Medio"; [ en-US]? not [ it ]? why? "medio" is in "it" language!
--deneb 14:16, 5 November 2009 (UTC) this is a copy&paste error! the correct string should be: Text [ it ] = "Medio";
-- Eric Bachard 14:39, 5 November 2009 (UTC) Indeed. Was a wild copy paste. Apologies, and fixed :)
* Expert
Text [ en-US ] = "Expert";
Text [ fr ] = "Expert";
Text [ en-US ] = "Esperto [ en-US]? not [ it ]? why? " esperto" is in "it" language!
--deneb 14:16, 5 November 2009 (UTC) another copy&paste error! I'm sorry! the correct string should be: Text [ it ] = "Esperto";
Same issue than the previous one : bad copy paste -- Eric Bachard 14:39, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
The suggestion:
Text [ it ] = "Benvenuto su"; i think is better "Benvenuto in" if this string appear at the entrance of OOo4Kids

--deneb 14:16, 5 November 2009 (UTC) I'm agree with you
-- Eric Bachard 14:39, 5 November 2009 (UTC) Done :)

There are some inconsistenties in the font for the different locales. Which is correct?
Answer :
I assumed we'll use {&VerdanaBold14}. If people disagree, no problem to reverse the choice.

I can't understand the contribution process All I have to do is add my strings to the list and it will be added or I should make patches for the source? Yaron 12:26, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Hi Yaron,
We'll soon propose an IRC meeting, because a lot of people join and we must organize us better. FYI, Marina Latini will manage the translation process, and very probably we'll use Pootle tool for that.
For the moment, your locale is not planned for 1.0, but if you want to add it, we can provide you the instructions, to do your own build (more difficult in Windows). If you want to discuss with us, our prefered way is to use IRC ( channel is #ooo4Kids , server is irc.freenode.net )

STR_BACKING_DRAW
String STR_BACKING_DRAW
Text [ en-US ] = "Draw something";
Text [ fr ] = "Dessiner quelque chose";
Text [ es ] = "Dibuja lo que quieras";
Text [ it ] ="Disegnare qualche cosa";
In the strings of the other applications, we have always included the name of the application itself. Wouldn't it be better to write "Draw something with draw"?

Hello everybody, I'm Risto from Finland and starter in OOo4Kids and in Wiki. Sorry if there is some mistakes.
Just asking if there is too many quotes: nl = "De installatie is geslaagd" Klik op de knop 'Voltooien' om de installatie af te sluiten." (This page is a kind bug report page for Wiki-page, too?) Another thing is few french lines without quotes at all but maybe they are OK? Every other language have them.
And maybe I can tell you that I find many other European languges quite similar in stucture and different from Finnish. For example 'Welcome to ... OOO4Kids' should translate 'Tervetuloa ... OOO4Kidsiin' but it is not possible here. And 'Tervetuloa ... OOO4Kids' is like the user is welcoming program which is a bit funny. But we Finn are not specially verbally polite so translation 'Nyt alkaa ... OOO4Kids' meaning 'Now starts ... OOO4Kids' I think is OK.

some points
I move the discussion from the general wiki to here to be more organize. So, I have done some translations. However, I face some problems. 1) When the string is "Draw something" , is it an order (I mean the program is asking the user to draw something)? or is it a tool? 2) for the names of the programs, there are three ways to translate them:
A) write them as they are. Ex: "Create a text with Writer" ---> "Writer إنشاء نص مع " <--- and this way is not good for several reasons:
- ) Arabic is readable from right to left. so, it is not easy to read the sentences, specially for kids.
- ) the sentence will mix. Ex: إنشاء نص مع writer. <--- this is the first sentence that showed when I wrote the translation. After several way of writing it, I managed to fix as in first example. So, I am afraid that when you copy the translation in program, it will mix again.
B) write them in Arabic but keep the pronunciation. Ex, إنشاء نص مع رايتر . In other words, when you read "رايتر", it has the same pronunciation as "writer". So, "رايتر" is not an Arabic word.
C) write the meaning. Ex, إنشاء نص مع الكاتب . Here, "الكاتب" means "writer". However, it does not pronunciation as "Writer". it pronunciation as "Katb" which means "writer". in my opinion, The third choice is the best of them because it is readable and understandable to kids.

I am still waiting for your answer ....

I perfectly am aware of your changes, but I'm fully busy until next week, and will probably be busy next week too (big overload at work and event to attend next week, my family needs some love too ..). So, to avoid forgetting or whatever else about your proposal, what I propose, is to subscribe at the mailing list : http://lists.adullact.net/pipermail/ooo4kids1-devel/ and explain there who you are, what you did and provide links. Please do not use arabic characters, because I fear not much of people will understand. Another thing I have to say, is the number of requests for new locales is growing (two norvegian locales are scheduled too), and we will improve the process very soon.
To summarize : please be a bit patient, and everything will be fine.
